5 Facts About Our Development and Engineering Department

The development and engineering team at Kläger Plastik and Kläger SPC, based at the Hartha (Saxony) site, is responsible for two key areas – Performance Polymers and Spraying Technology – and therefore also serves as a point of contact for the company headquarters in Neusäß. As a small, experienced and agile team, the in-house development and engineering department is a central pillar for the realization of both customer-specific and proprietary products. Here are five interesting facts about our team:

1. Broad expertise: We design BOTH spraying systems AND precision components

The development and engineering team at Kläger Plastik and Kläger SPC is characterized by a wide range of expertise. Plastics engineering is the connecting element, yet the tasks in Performance Polymers and Spraying Technology differ significantly.

Kläger SPC in Hartha is primarily a contract injection molder specializing in high-performance plastics and automotive applications. Close and cooperative collaboration with customers is at the core of our work. We are familiar with the entire development process and support our partners in achieving the best possible product design and visualization.

We specialize in high-performance plastics such as PPS and complex tooling and manufacturing technologies. Over many years, we have built extensive know-how in hybrid technology – the combination of plastic and metal – a key differentiator for Kläger SPC. Combined with our expertise in Spraying Technology, this makes us a highly capable and versatile team.

For spraying systems at Kläger Plastik in Neusäß, we are responsible for both process and product development. The requirements and standards for these systems differ significantly from those in the automotive industry. This demands a broad skill set, which our employees have developed over time. However, both areas benefit from this shared knowledge, as expertise can be transferred and synergies can be leveraged.

2. From idea to production: We support the entire process

A new project starts either with a customer request or an internal idea. The first step is always a technical and commercial evaluation together with other departments to assess feasibility.

Once implementation is confirmed and the offer is accepted, all necessary steps toward production are initiated. We are heavily involved in all project phases, with a strong focus on the early stages of planning and analysis. Together with project management, we coordinate all activities to successfully bring a project into serial production.

The time required for development varies greatly. If a request concerns a well-designed injection-molded part with proven experience, a quotation can be prepared within a week – in urgent cases even within a day.

For complex assemblies involving tight tolerances, inserts such as contacts, new automation concepts, or non-optimized designs, quotation preparation may take weeks or even months due to iterative optimization with customers and suppliers. However, investing time at this stage is essential for a smooth production launch later on.

3. Extensive analysis: We evaluate manufacturability of new products

As described above, our main focus lies in planning and analysis, especially in evaluating the manufacturability of new products. Each component and its potential production processes are systematically analyzed to avoid errors and obstacles later in the project.

Our analyses include:

  • Injection-molding-friendly design and material selection
  • Draft angle analysis
  • Undercut analysis
  • Wall thickness analysis
  • Mold flow simulation
  • Definition of parting lines and surfaces
  • Tool and automation concept development
  • Contribution to process FMEA
  • Evaluation of customer-specified tolerances

Throughout the project, we maintain close communication with project management, sales, customers, suppliers, and internal teams to ensure successful execution.

For Spraying Technology at the headquarters in Neusäß, our work includes product and process development for spray systems – from concept to series production.

For both business areas, we are also responsible for designing tooling equipment such as injection molds and required fixtures.

4. In-house development: How our customers benefit

Having an in-house development and engineering department is not a matter of course. The physical proximity to project management and production allows us to actively participate in operational processes. Short communication and decision paths enable fast responses.

In addition, we have deep knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of our manufacturing technologies. Feasibility can be assessed directly on site, and both positive and negative experiences are incorporated into future projects.

“Our customers benefit from smooth project workflows and on-time product launches,” says Ronny Langer, Head of Development & Engineering.

“This valuable know-how must remain within the company to ensure future growth and secure jobs. I am proud that we have such a competent in-house development and engineering team,” adds Kristian Kläger, CEO and Managing Partner.

5. Ready for the future: We grow with our challenges

Legal requirements and customer-specific demands continue to increase, while competitive pressure is rising. We see these challenges as motivation to push boundaries even further.

“We try to move these limits by continuously optimizing existing manufacturing technologies and thinking in new directions to develop innovative solutions,” summarizes Ronny Langer.
