The styling mousse is designed to support natural hair volume and create a push-up effect. In conventional benchmark products, synthetic polymers are typically used to achieve this volumizing effect. These polymers coat the hair and ensure that individual strands remain separated, thereby holding the hairstyle in place.
The issue is that during hair washing, these polymers are at least partially rinsed out, enter wastewater, and are difficult to biodegrade.
The customer’s requirement was to develop a foam mousse free from microplastics and based on as many natural and sustainable ingredients as possible. In the formulation development of this product, the team led by Dr. Christian Melchert, Head of Research & Development, delivered outstanding results.
By using various starches as styling and thickening agents, an innovative formulation was achieved that works very well as a sustainable alternative to formulations containing synthetic polymers.
The final formulation was then produced as bulk material in the mixing room, filled into containers, and will be available in retail within the coming weeks.
